Choosing Gas Monitors for Confined Space
19th Jan 2022
Gas Monitors are vital for staff working in confined spaces. Employers are required to take all necessary safety precautions to protect those at risk, and so it’s extremely important that you choose the correct gas monitors for confined space work.
Working in a confined space
HSE describes a confined space as one which is enclosed, or largely enclosed, and poses “a reasonably foreseeable risk”.
Much as we may think of confined spaces as being small, cramped, restrictive spaces, they could also be much larger spaces like a grain storage silo.
What are the risks?
The potential of specified risks posed in these types of environments include fire, explosion, loss of consciousness, asphyxiation, or drowning. A fast, or undetected build up of liquids, gases, or even free-flowing solids could result in disastrous consequences.
Gases may already be present in a confined space before work begins, or it could be introduced during the working process (eg. welding, or from cleaning chemicals).
Safety measures you need to take
Proper risk assessments need to be undertaken for all confined spaces. Where possible, you should avoid carrying out tasks in confined spaces. When this is not possible, proper safety measures need to be put in place to mitigate the risks.
This includes proper ventilation, valves to evacuate water, dust, and free-flowing solids like grain, and appropriate equipment to measure gas levels in the environment.
If you are unsure what measures you need to take, always consult an expert.
