Case Study: Manx Telecom

Intro
Manx Telecom is the leading communication solutions provider on the Isle of Man. Delivering a broad portfolio of telecommunications products and services, IT and managed solutions to the island’s residents, they service circa 37,000 households and circa 4,000 businesses.
Manx Telecom has a unique track record of innovation and being first to market with many of their services, and therefore prefer to have the most innovative solutions to their own needs as well.
The Challenge
As with many industries, hidden gas hazards can pose a risk to workers in the telecoms industry. Gases such as methane, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide can run through the cable trunking, which means workers can potentially be exposed when they open termination boxes. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that all workers have access to the proper gas detection equipment.
Manx Telecom has a number of network engineers that are out working in the field, sometimes on their own. Their engineers are required to access confined spaces, and work in remote areas where they sometimes have no contact with other people for prolonged periods of time.
They needed to make sure that each team member was equipped with a device that would monitor the gas and oxygen levels in the area, as well as monitoring the individual in case of an accident or incident. They also needed a device that would record the data for easy monitoring and auditing, to meet the company's lone worker policies.
The Solution
We took time to understand what Manx Telecom needed, and what challenges and hazards their workers were likely to face. After a consultation, we realised that the best solution was the new Blackline Safety G7.
We understand the importance of making the right decision when it comes to buying any kind of safety equipment, and particularly gas monitors. So, we sent over some members of our team to demonstrate the devices, and show how they could be used to keep staff safe in the field.
After having some units on loan for a few weeks, the team at Manx Telecom could clearly see the advantages these powerful devices had to offer. They went on to place an order for 45 units for their engineering staff.
The Outcome
When we reached out to ask how everything was going with the units, we got the following report:
“Since we have had the devices we have been able to monitor the device usage, gas alerts and also had several alerts that we previously couldn’t monitor with our old devices. The Health and Safety of our engineers is a priority for our company and having these devices monitoring just that is a weight off our minds.
It’s great having that reassurance that if our engineers need help we are alerted straight away and can put the wheels in motion to ensure that the member of staff is safe and well.”
The Verdict
“Point Safety and Blackline have been fantastic in their response to any issues that we have had. They are there if we require any sort of assistance or help with anything regarding our GDU’s / Lone worker devices.” - Simon Hampson, Manx Telecom
