 Maintain your Gas Detectors

 Maintain your Gas Detectors

15th Dec 2022

We are all aware of the importance of making sure our gas detectors are in good working order.

Routine maintenance, calibration and bump testing play an important role in keeping all of the equipment working at optimal levels, and keeping people safe.

Why do we need to Calibrate Gas Monitors?

Calibration of gas detection equipment is one of the first steps in the maintenance cycle as it ensures they are working to optimal levels, and accurately detecting gas concentrations.

To calibrate a gas monitor you need to expose it to a known concentration of the test gas for a certain amount of time. The gas monitor will then use this reading as its calibration or reference point. The reason you need to do this regularly is that the sensors within the gas monitors can become less accurate due to becoming “poisoned” by things like dust, solvents and other airborne particles as well as weather conditions and daily knocks and bumps.

What’s Bump Testing?

Functional testing, or “Bump tests” make sure the gas monitor will alert you to harmful levels of gas.

During the test the monitor's sensor is exposed to a concentration of a test gas that is set to a higher level than the alarm point of that particular sensor.

Bump tests prove the sensor is responding and the alarm goes off.

Isn’t all of this a bit Time Consuming?

Maintaining your gas detectors means you are safe in the knowledge you have done all you can to make sure your safety equipment is working and keeping people safe.

If you don’t keep this maintenance up, then you run the risk of being exposed to dangerous levels of gas, which could cause sickness, injury or even death.

It does take time, and you may be incredibly busy and worried you may forget about the routine test, or not have time to complete them in a set routine.

That’s where Point Safety comes in.

As well as a range of test gases and calibration equipment, we offer various maintenance contracts for both personal and fixed gas detection systems.

Our highly skilled engineers have continuous manufacturer training which means they are approved and authorised to carry out calibrations to comply with regulations and current legislation.
