- Inhalation of high concentrations of H2S can produce extremely rapid unconsciousness and death

- People can smell the “rotten egg” odour of H2S at low concentrations in air, as H2S is heavier than air and is often found near to the ground

- H2S is produced naturally from decaying organic matter. It can be released from sewage sludge, liquid manure, and sulfur hot springs, and with natural gas

- H2S dissolves in water and oil, and it may be released when these liquids are heated, depressurized, or agitated

- Slurry mixing has caused many deaths (farmers and livestock) over the last few years, which are mainly caused by H2S inhalation
